The Damped Oscillation of your Heart
Every life has one, a damped oscillation, one that guides you towards happiness. It’s the soul that keeps you on your inner joy and happiness. A damped oscillation is visualised with a curvature that passes through a straight line, up and down, and slowly decreases in amplitude. In this, the soul is the straight line, and the curvature is you.
Some people, at an early age, form a curve, a wave of changes and moments close to the axis of their soul. Some are far away from it. Some lose sight of theirs and feel their aptitude grow far away from their internal compass of joy. While sondering(1) about this, I can’t speak on the reasons and variables that make other people lose sight of their axis, often uncontrollable.
It’s funny, your heart is there constantly, well, for me at least. I feel that my heart is loudest when I do something that hurts it. For instance, when I lie, or when I make a decision that goes against my morals, or when I choose to do a job because it pays well but destroys my creativity. It can take many shapes and forms, but your heart will tell you loudly when your amplitude is far away from your truth. If you listen, you can steer back, directing your attention back to the desired equilibrium, where the soul is at peace, and where pure happiness exists.
In this phase, after you listened and delivered on your heart’s desire to change something in your life, the most magical thing happens. You slowly move closer to this axis of the heart. You can feel that you made the right choice, and your excitement starts to grow because of this new path. It was scary to make that change, but now the dopamine rushes because it was the right one. Closer and closer you approach, until eventually, you touch it. You feel it, your mind and physical form come into contact with your heart, where true happiness resides. You now understand why you made that choice, that hard decision to break your patterns. You want to hold onto it, true happiness, to be present in that ultimate form of joy.
It’s like when you share your first kiss with the person you feel you’ll love forever, after opening your heart in the most vulnerable state on a balcony under moonlight. Or when you see the sunrise after a sickening hike to the top of a mountain you trained for for weeks. Or when you read that passage in a book that touches your soul right there and then. It’s that moment that makes you feel alive in an indescribable way. Nothing matters in that moment, the ultimate form of presence, and the now. And then, it’s gone, a mere memory of what once was.
Sometimes we pass through and feel this touch of the soul and reality. By following your heart, your own truth, this will happen more frequently. The beauty is in never truly being at equilibrium, because if we are, will we even feel it?
- Sonder(ing) is the profound realization that every person you encounter has a life as vivid and complex as your own.
