Our Material Process
At Romance on Mars, experimentation lies at the heart of everything we create. We believe that understanding the process adds meaning to the final piece.
Every knit is crafted from up-cycled, high-quality manufacturing swatches sourced from a closed knitwear mill in the Netherlands. Some of these textiles have been stored for more than 30 years, allowing time and sunlight to leave subtle traces, creating naturally sun-faded stripes and unique variations in colour.
We choose these materials for several reasons. They offer a more sustainable alternative to newly produced fabrics while possessing a depth of character and individuality that is rarely found in conventional textiles. Because these swatches exist in limited quantities, every piece is inherently rare, sometimes to the point where only a single piece can be made, making each design both unique and, at times, impossible to reproduce.
We believe in sourcing materials intelligently and working with resources that are already available, creating a healthy and ethical foundation for Romance on Mars. While up-cycled materials are central to our process today, we remain open to new sourcing methods as they become more responsible, innovative, and aligned with our values.
